Challanges

Whats happening in Mozambique

Skate World Better is a non-profit based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Our goal is to build the first public skatepark in Maputo, Mozambique by fall 2019 in order to support Maputo's skateboarding community. To reach our goal we teamed up with Maputo-Skate and ASM

Mozambique is a country located in south-east Africa experiencing a "youth bulge" in it's population. We believe that skateboarding can be used as a tool to keep kids away from the dangers of drug use and crime, which are unfortunately prevalent in Mozambique capital city.

This project will also provide the city of Maputo with hip and resurgent places of recreation and assembly.

Solutions

What are we doing to help

We came up with an interconnected project, that not only joints multiple activities, but also people of all origins with different interest.

All together, we will rebuild two youth centers that will serve all kinds of purposes within the city of Maputo. And TWO new fixed skateparks!

Build

SWB along with WONDERS AROUND THE WORLD will help Maputo-Skate and ASM to build the first two public skateparks in Mozambique along with youth centers on the properties. One location is the central district called Maxaquene, while the second location is in a densely populated suburban Khongolote. Both parks will be fixed concrete spots for both, skilled skaters and beginners. Each park will feature a technical and playful section. implementing urban elements.

Teach

Once the skatepark is built, educational seminars, workshops, concerts, and exhibitions will take place in both locations. After the opening ceremony, both organizations will facilitate regular skateboarding lessons and afterschool activities.

Skate

Trough skateboarding we want to offer a playful and creative way to learn and make new friendships. In skating, competitiveness is replaced by joint effort and enthusiasm for progress.

To bolster local skate culture we are also bringing skateboards, skate gear, cameras and experience with us, to give away in Maputo.

Culture

Walls surrounding the properties will serve as a free canvas for local artists and art enthusiasts.

Furthermore, the centers will regularly host art exhibitions, video premieres, craft workshops, lectures, readings and much more.

Achievements

By now we have already secured the most important essentials to make this happen.

The land I

The first land is about 240 square meters in one of the poorer central districts called Maxaquene. We want to transform that into a kidney shaped bowl.

land

The land II

The second land is much bigger around 600 square meters in a suburban area of Maputo called Kongolate. The neighbourhood is very densely populated, so we will build a bigger park with a variety of obstacles.

boards

Our boards

We have created our own design with one of our sponsors, Ambassadors skate company. Some boards will be sold to skaters around the world for funding, while the rest will be brought to Maputo for local skaters.

Other accomplishments

We keep our pace and we do not mean to slow down. Communication is a key element of this project.

23

professional engineers, builders, architects, photographers, academics and skateboarders are already part of this project.
